From first words to confident communication
Our courses form a coherent learning path, from the first lessons for the youngest children to preparation for Cambridge exams at C1 Advanced level. The graphic shows the relationship between CEFR level, approximate age, recommended exam and group name.
Ages are approximate. We place students in groups based on a placement test or a consultation with our director of studies, according to their level and ability rather than their date of birth. Students can join at any stage.
The learner's skills at each level
CEFR levels describe a student's practical skills. They are not just about grammar: they describe what a student can understand, say, read and write.

Pre A1 first steps
Students recognise basic words and very short messages. They understand simple instructions, respond with single words or short phrases, and can give basic information about themselves.

Students can understand and use simple expressions related to everyday needs. They can introduce themselves and others, ask basic questions and answer them if the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
